I wrote a very balanced article here about Gartner's choices, but your WordPress Captcha thingy said I can't read and dismissed it.

It advised me to use the back button and retry. Well yeah... my entire contribution was deleted so thanks very much.

Now this is one of those reasons why Open Source can suck.

Though I think it's shameful that one of the most used OSS CMSs like WordPress fails on something so simple and it is probably a no-biggie thing to fix technically, in this case anti-spam security prevailed over usability.

If a paying customer is driving the vendor hard to prioritise fixing these technically small but practically annoying thing, it gets fixed because it's important and money talks. In an OSS foundation one must hope for the co-operation of an individual developer and because there's no money involved, there's nothing to push but his honour. So the customer will have one choice and that is fixing it themselves and post the improved version to the community, then hope it gets included in the next release so they don't have to retrofit their own improvements back in again.

Osmek recently debuted as the first cloud cms with a robust api for development. You should check it out, its a revolutionary idea for content management. No installation, develop in any language, a beautiful gui, what more could you ask for?

It's going to be a whole before we see any CMS cloud offering from the liked of Oracle, Autonomy. Acquia have recently lanched Drupal Gardens which is a cloud based service which looks very promising.
There are a host of reasons why we are not moving onto the cloud more quickly, the main reason is organizational change where budgets and contracts are set and awarded years for 3, 4 even 5 years. Come renewal time some clients are demanding CMS in the cloud but then have to consider other issues such as integration with CRM & other back offices systems.

I think it will happen eventually but first we have to disrupt the business models of software sales we have created!

This is a great list and definitely rings true with what we are seeing with our ad agency and media clients. A couple of things that I would add:

User Generated Content: Configuring and moderating content from the user

Measurement: Who is looking at the content where (website, mobile site, facebook, youtube) and how often?

The on-demand thing is big with our agency clients as well. Rather than pay tens of thousands for an enterprise license, pay for the months that the campaign or contest is live.

Regarding the cloud, using Amazon S3 for video and heavy file storage has proven invaluable in terms of redunancy and scalability for a very minimal cost.

Looking forward to seeing how 2010 pans out!

Well-written. Thanks. I have been learning a lot about different CMS programs lately. I have also been experimenting with setting up an e-commerce site using WordPress. Have you ever done that? Any suggestions for me? It's pretty fun learning it. If you'd like to see my blog it's here. Thanks again for this blog - it is really educational.

Matt,

This is a great list, and I think your predictions are spot on. I believe that the the expansion of Open Source is partly driven by cloud computing. As companies are looking to leverage cloud solutions for agility, the licensing complications with commercial solutions will drive further open source usage.

On the more complex side, the ability to handle multiple sites/brands in many different languages will be important as companies are looking to consolidate their web infrastructure.
